Casting

Contingency Plan‏

Cast Dropping Out/Unreliable Cast:
If actors do not show up on set, we will use members of the crew (the group) to replace the characters that have not shown up. This means majority of the primary characters are replaceable. Also, we have willing actors ready to step forward to play the role of the woodland tea party creatures.

Crew Not Showing Up/Being Late
Because we are the crew, one member's role may alternate on the day if one member of the crew is unable to or simply doesn't show up.

Location Becoming Unavailable: Too Noisy/Too Crowded/Closed-Off
Because our location choices are quite generic and can be shot at various different locations, for instance, if we are unable to film at Clapham Junction Tube Station, we can film at another tube station or film at Clapham at a less busier time.

Camera Battery Running Out
We will always carry at least one spare and full battery pack on our person, so if one battery does finish, we always have one in reserve.

Music Video Facts and Figures

Questionnaire Research and Analysis

Final Song Selection

Final Song

After an effective discussion, my group and I decided we would use this track  in our music video, as it offers a very alternative beat, which helps to creates a lot of enigma, which is an element we were looking for in our final track. It also, has a sufficient amount of lyrics in the music video by both a male and a female, allowing us to be very flexible in our performance. Also, it the track is significantly long allowing us to have a lot of song to work with as 'cover' as and when we need it.

Song selection

1. Papi Pacify

My group and I enjoyed this song as it offered a very obscure and relaxing element to it, allowing as to come across as unique, linking in well with the genre (alternative hip hop). However, the slow pace would make it very difficult for us to perform effectively.

2. She Was Fly - Full Crati

We chose this track as one of our options for our final song selection as the beat is very suttle and light, linking in will with our potential theme of 'Alice In Wonderland', however there are minimal lyrics throughout the video, again limiting our performance and therefore the quality of our final music video.

3. LNIP - Katya Des Estages (He's Coming Home)

Finally, we chose this track in the end as it offer a very alternative beat and creates a lot of enigma, which as an element we were looking for in our final track. It also, has a sufficient amount of lyrics in the music video by both a male and a female, allowing us to be very flexible in our performance.

Audience Survey

Today in lesson my group and I were create a questionnaire to give to out target audience. This was done in order for us to be more familiar with how they felt about the different genres of music, this could then help us to tailor our own video to suit their needs.

Evaluation of student music videos

This students music video is avery good example, as it has many aspects of proficiency. I particularly enjoyed the editing to the beat towards the start of the track, this helps to create a sense of consistency and shows that the students are reasonably skilled and have a good understanding of how to utilise the editing facilities. I intend to transfer this skill into my music video as I have now had experience in this area.

Director Case Study Auteur Theory

Auteur theory suggests that a director can use equipment to create a film in the same way the writer uses a pen or a painter uses his paint or paintbrush.

Artistic and creative style is bought by the director as a standard of reference, associates directors with a certain style of film.

Music video directors can be auteurs, auteurs may use the medium to showcase a distinct style, repetition of themes and iconography (symbolic codes)

Structure of Music Video

There are four types of structures to a music video:

1. Performance

A performance is a situation whereby the artist/s behave in certain way in order to entertain their audience, usually done through dance. Above is an example of a performance music video, Beyoncé's "Single Ladies" displays a series of dance moves, choreographed cleverly to be sync to the song.

2. Abstract

This music video "Big Sean - Fire" is an example of an abstract video, as their is no clear narrative if any and the visuals do not seem to match to lyrics as their is no correlation, excluding the fact that in one or to scenes elements of fire are shown to the audience.

3. Narrative

Beyoncé's "Irreplaceable" is excellent example of a Performance structured music video, as the video matches accurately with visuals, this allows the audience to follow the narrative quite easily. This links in well with Goodwin's theory of the creation of a music video.

4. Hybrid

This music video is an example of what is called a 'hybrid', this is when there is a mixture of any of the different structures explained above in a music video. Typically, music videos contain elements of both narrative and performance like in this example however this is not the case all the time.

Genre codes and conventions

Codes are a way of creating meaning. The following are the different types of codes;
  • Technical codes - This includes the way in which text is technically constructed camera angles, framing, typography etc.
  • verbal codes - These are codes that can be decoded on a mainly connotational level - drawn upon our experience and understanding of other media texts, (cultural frame reference).
In media studies, a message is often described as being 'encoded' from the sender (producer) and the 'decoded' by the reciever.

For semiotics, a code is the framework, a learned and shared conceptual connection at work in all uses of signs.

Conventions are the commonly understand ways of doing things in a media text. The use of conventions in a music video help the audience to identify the genre of the song and artist.

For example, within the genre of Hip Hop, music videos tend to include images that display wealth, superior (linking into star theory) and sexually objectifying. This is shown in the example below in 50 Cent's "Candy Shop".
Wealth is shown through the artist wearing expensive jewellery and clothing, such as a fur coat. Also, 50 Cent stepping out of an up-market car helps to show he is very well off and has a lot of money. Hip Hop artists' tend to do this in their music videos as it shows their audience that 'they have made it', and are no longer 'suffering'.

Whereas, in the popular music genre Pop, these music videos care commonly quite child friendly. This shown through very 'clean' and positive lyrics along with reasonably young and vibrant artists.

For example, in Katy Perry's "Firework" which is seen to be an inspiring song which matched quite nicely with its music video. Katy Perry is shown to be a sensible and attractive young women, one arguably suitable to be a role model to her community or young people. Also, by having numerous vibrant and bright colours throughout the video, helps to connote happiness, a common convention within this music genre.

Producer Strategies

A particular style or image can affect the success of a music artist.

Narrative - Some producer's will encourage a provocative narrative in the video that will encourage word of mouth exposure.

Remarkig - Once a video is successful, it is possible (altthough unusual) to reshoot a video with a bigger budget.

Types of promotion

  • Tour Production endorsement (synergy)
  • Connection to a film
  • Collaboration (commonly with bigger artists)
  • Social media
  • TV/Magazine, interviews etc.
  • E.g. Daft Punks 'Get Lucky'
In terms of budgeting, creating the most expensive music video of all time was very competitive in the 80's and 90's.

Types of Producers

Major label

  • For a mainstream artist
  • Artists are generally in the charts and have losts of sales
  • Large budget
  • Use promotional material, synergy
  • Use popular music genres e.g. RnB/Pop/Hip Hop
  • An example of this would be Rhianna, who signed to Roc Nation
 Independent Label
  • Much smaller budget
  • Niche market music genre
  • The selected target audience and music artist often credit music videos as an art form.
  • Artists are usually experiemental, creative and artistic
  • Less experience in the music industry
  • An example of this would be Aphex Twin is signed to Warp Records
 The Artist

  •  Artists may decide to make videos themselves
  • Often unsigned, can be used as a promotional tool
  • Due to budget limitaions
  • It may also reflect a desire to take artistic control of the visuals
  • Cost effective technical equipment
  • User friendly, Youtube tutorials

Purpose of music videos

The main purpose of a music videos is seen to be for promotion. The could either promotion of the song, artist or album. In order for the producer to achieve this they must present the artist to their audience in a number of different ways that all make them appealing, these include the following;

  • Attractive
  • Empathic
  • Narrative
  • Abstract
They sometimes link directly to the song and the lyrics, or they present something different to the audience to entertain them. For example, in the image below Beyonce in her "Best I ever had" she is seen to be attractive to her audience, hence the sexual appeal by having minimal clothes on.

Another purpose of a music video is the use of synergy, particular used by major labels, which again comes under promotion. Synergy is where two products or companies combine to make a video, and use the video as a platform to give them success in their selected area.

Synergy is often provided in popular music videos, starring well-known artists, as this may widen the products audience. Therefore companies tend to pay labels to advertise their products in a music video, as they know it will be viewed by messes of people, benefiting them in the long run, as the audience are likely to associate the product with the video or artist improving its publicity. An example of this would be in Eminem's "Not afraid" 'Beats' by Dr Dre are advertised or in Britney Spears' video where she is advertising 'Sony' the brand.

Extention of Income and Outlets

Music videos are a good way for companies to make money; it cashes in on the success of a song, and helps to boost sales of other products linked to the singer. For example Michael Jackson's Thriller album took over $500 million in sales, no doubt boosted massively by the music video. A songwriter will get paid $40 for every 1 million views on Youtube. A music video gives the record comapny and artist numerous ways to expand its potential audience.

Producer Strategies

The music industry often has a motive for the style, narrative, production and promotion of the video and artist. A variety of strategies that producers' use in order to encourage single, album and tour sales, promotion of artist and sales of merchandise etc.

Favourite Music Video

In my media lesson today I presented to the class one of my favourite music videos, "Eminem - When I'm Gone". This video is shown to be a story told by him in a support group, the video displayed a hyprid, with both narrative and performance elements.

This is one of my favourite video's due to the artist, 'Eminem', being my favourite artist. Do is mainly due to the strong narrative that he brings into his music, which strikes me with a sense of empathy. In this particular there are scenes of him entertaining on stage, which is seen as performance.

Lastly, this video conforms to many of the conventions of RnB and Rap, by the components such as the misc-en-scene and narrative. For example the lighting is very low-key, the dress code being quite 'thug like' and the lyrics being quite aggressive and serious.

The screen shot below displays the artist being quite aggressive and troubled, one of the common conventions shown in many music videos of this genre. This is also linked to the lyrics said, as the narrative is usually quite serious, "I turn around, find a gun on the ground, cock it, and put it to my brain", were the words said whilst this image was visible in sync.

The second screen shot below shows artist,  Eminem, in his costume. A baggy jersey, a 'du-rag' and a baseball cap, typical dress code for a RnB/Hip Pop artist, therefore conforming to the conventions. This helps the audience to identify the genre of the music very quickly.
