Purpose of music videos

The main purpose of a music videos is seen to be for promotion. The could either promotion of the song, artist or album. In order for the producer to achieve this they must present the artist to their audience in a number of different ways that all make them appealing, these include the following;

  • Attractive 
  • Empathic
  • Narrative 
  • Abstract
They sometimes link directly to the song and the lyrics, or they present something different to the audience to entertain them. For example, in the image below Beyonce in her "Best I ever had" she is seen to be attractive to her audience, hence the sexual appeal by having minimal clothes on.


Another purpose of a music video is the use of synergy, particular used by major labels, which again comes under promotion. Synergy is where two products or companies combine to make a video, and use the video as a platform to give them success in their selected area. 

Synergy is often provided in popular music videos, starring well-known artists, as this may widen the products audience. Therefore companies tend to pay labels to advertise their products in a music video, as they know it will be viewed by messes of people, benefiting them in the long run, as the audience are likely to associate the product with the video or artist improving its publicity. An example of this would be in Eminem's "Not afraid" 'Beats' by Dr Dre are advertised or in Britney Spears' video where she is advertising 'Sony' the brand.





Extention of Income and Outlets

Music videos are a good way for companies to make money; it cashes in on the success of a song, and helps to boost sales of other products linked to the singer. For example Michael Jackson's Thriller album took over $500 million in sales, no doubt boosted massively by the music video. A songwriter will get paid $40 for every 1 million views on Youtube. A music video gives the record comapny and artist numerous ways to expand its potential audience.

Producer Strategies

The music industry often has a motive for the style, narrative, production and promotion of the video and artist. A variety of strategies that producers' use in order to encourage single, album and tour sales, promotion of artist and sales of merchandise etc.
